We asked Lauren Lee, a skincare expert and founder at Australia’s top K-beauty website, STYLE STORY, to give us a detailed rundown of the waiting periods for each type of skincare product.

Cleansers: Straight Away

It will be evident if your cleanser removes all of your makeup, dirt, and other gunk.

It’s not a good product if it leaves behind some impurities. Double cleansing and toner cleansing are unnecessary. Get a cleanser that works.

It shouldn’t take everything off your skin in one step, but leave it tightened and dry. It’s causing your skin to lose its protective barrier, drying it out, and irritating your skin. It’s time to get rid of it!

A cleanser that quickly removes all traces of makeup and leaves skin soft and supple is the right one for you.

Exfoliants: Straight Away To A Month

It all depends on the type of exfoliant you use: chemical or physical.

Physical exfoliants are small particles such as salt, apricot kernels, or silicone brushes (Foreo Luna). They can manually remove dead skin cells and reveal smoother, brighter skin underneath. They are instantaneous.

Chemical exfoliants are pretty different. They use exfoliating Acid, such as glycolic or salicylic, to dissolve the glue that binds skin cells together. They don’t immediately remove dead cells. They make it easier for cells when it’s convenient.

To reap the full benefits, you will need to wait for a month. However, you will notice a slight improvement in skin condition within a few days.

How Long Does It Take A New Skin Care Routine To Work Moisturizers 1-2 Days

Moisturizers: 1-2 Days

FYI: I use moisturizer to refer to all products claiming to moisturize and hydrate the skin. These include moisturizing creams and serums containing hyaluronic acids, hydrating essences, and toners.

The quickest way to improve the appearance of your skin is to add moisture.

Your skin will feel softer if it has all the moisture it requires. Your fine lines and wrinkles will appear smaller when your skin is plump. The whole complexion glows like it’s lit from within.

Antiaging moisturizers can make your wrinkles disappear instantly. There’s nothing wrong with that. Your skin needs moisture.

Acne Products 1 Week To 1.5 Months

Acne Products: 1 Week To 1.5 Months

This is the one skincare product that you need to use quickly. These pimples can be very painful. They can ruin your skin and make it difficult to leave the house.

Keep going! How severe your acne is will determine how fast anti-acne treatments work. Are you only experiencing one or two pimples? Spot treatment can make your pimples disappear in a matter of days.

Cystic acne can be a severe condition that causes severe pain. For prescription treatment, see a dermatologist. Although you should see some improvement in a few days, it may take up to a month for your skin to completely clear up.

Skin-Lightening Products: 2 Months

Dark spots. Sunspots. Melasma. They all occur when your skin produces too much melanin (the pigment that gives the skin its color).

Inhibiting melanin production can reverse darkening and restore skin to its natural color. The excess pigment gradually fades as it is brought under control.

How slow? It should take at least two months to show results if you use it every day.

Antiaging products: From 3 Months to Years

Anti-aging products often contain antioxidants that prevent wrinkles. These are the most frustrating products to use in skincare because it is difficult to tell if they work. They won’t be around for long.

Here’s the deal: Antioxidants destroy free radicals BEFORE these can cause damage and give you wrinkles. They prevent damage.

It’s similar to working out not to have a heart attack at 50. Once you realize you are in better shape than your friends, you will be glad you didn’t give up.

Some antiaging products use a different approach. These products use potent actives such as retinol or vitamin C to increase collagen, the protein that keeps your skin elastic and firm.

Collagen metabolism can be a complex process. It is not possible to give your skin just a little bit of retinol and expect it immediately to boost your collagen production. You need to wait at most three months for results.

How Long It Takes for Skin-Care Products to Work Sunscreen

Sunscreen: Years

Sunscreen, like antioxidants, prevents damage rather than treats it.

It won’t be easy to see results right away. You won’t immediately see results.

It does everything. The science is precise: Up to 90% of wrinkles and dark spots can be attributed to UV rays. Do you blame genes for those fine lines? They were given to you by the sun.

Worst part? The worst part? Even though you cannot see the sun, that doesn’t mean you aren’t causing damage to your skin.

Sunscreen is the best way to prevent wrinkles. EVERY. SINGLE. DAY.

AHAs & BHAs: Right Away, but Peaks at 12 Weeks

These terms are all over the place. But what do they mean? AHAs, and BHAs, are liquid exfoliators that are essentially mild acids.

They remove things that dull the skin, like dead skin cells or clogged pores. AHAs, which are water-soluble, hydroxy acids, are great for treating dull, dry skin. BHAs, on the other hand, are for unclogging pores and can be used to treat oily, acne-prone skin.

Lee advises patience and slow progress when it comes to the time you will have to wait before seeing results from these ingredients.

She warns that you shouldn’t allow yourself to be discouraged by the lack of immediate results. “Your skin doesn’t always react negatively immediately to damage, even if it is happening.”

How Do You Know if a Product Isn’t Right for You

How Do You Know if a Product Isn’t Right for You?

One product may work well for one person, but it does not mean that it will work for you. Patch testing is the fastest and most efficient way to determine if a product is right for you. Lee says there are three types of tests that you can use to test for different reactions.

Test for Allergies

Use the product behind your ears. Stop using it immediately if your skin is reddened, bumpy, or tingly. You can continue to the next test if there is no reaction.

Test for Irritation

Use the product on a small area of your neck or face. It is essential to note the type of irritation you experience if irritation occurs.

This is normal and does not necessarily mean that you have a problem if you are testing an acid (a product containing a BHA or AHA, glycolic acid, lactic acid, and so forth).

If you don’t experience any unusual irritation, you can proceed to the final test. This is to see if the product causes your pores to clog or break out.

Test for Clogging

Apply the product to the areas that are prone to breakouts. This product is not recommended if you have active acne, cysts, whiteheads, or clogged pores.
